MAVELO – 8 WEEK GROUP PROJECT
WHAT IS IT?
Mavelo was the result of an 8 week collaberation between 5 University of the Arts Utrecht students and 1 University of Utrecht student. We designed it to be a literal example of the workings of a perma-culture to be put up as a stand in a convention about nature and sustainability. It consists of three minigames all set in a representation of nature reserve “De Veluwe”, where each player has to do a balancing act to preserve the reserve.
WHAT DID I DO?
I was the only programmer on the team, and had to tackle a couple of rough tasks for the timeframe set out including, but not limited to:
- Implementing three different input types (mouse, joystick & Kinect V2.0)
- Implementing three different minigames
- Linking all three minigames in real-time and giving them instant, impactful feedback from all minigames (every deer shot in one game meant a deer less in another, etc.)
The game was received very well, including getting two offers from University of Utrecht and local government officials to put up the stand at one of their meetings / conventions, which due to us having to lend most of the hardware from the school while it was closed was, sadly, impossible.
